Accessories: New Luna NFC Bluetooth headsets – out of this world - NokiaVNN

If you were to see this in a  sci-fi/alien movie, it it wouldn’t look that out of place. It’s a very bold design from Nokia’s accessories team. You’ve got this alien like thing coming out of its little spaceship. The headset is appropriately called “Luna” (maybe that Space theme continues with Nokia Sun, huh?) We’ve had a Nokia Luna before – a very stunning phone belonging to Nokia’s luxury 8xxx series. Now to specs:

Nokia 603 Officially announced – look like Nokia’s Windows Phone concept

Nokia Conversations have officially announced the new Nokia 603 Belle Smartphone. I think they look great, and by far my favourite out of all the Belle designs. It’s new (not C7 like, eh 701?) but it’s very appealing (no funny lip, 700). This design was already much praised in the blogosphere, within Nokia circles and outside of them. So it’s fantastic to see it come alive and for Symbian fans, coming with Belle!

It reminds me a lot of that concept Windows Phone device. Both have bubbles on screen too.

Nokia 800 Advert: Nokia Sun #windowsphone #SeaRay - NokiaVNN

Been stuck in lectures so wasn’t able to post your tips. Phew. What you’re looking at is apparently the first Nokia 800 Advert. The Nokia 800 might be the Nokia Sun which we’ve seen mentioned before.

This images appear on pocketnow – these guys seem to end up with a lot of Nokia promos before launch for some reason.

Other things to tick off now is Sabre and Ace. SeaRay is possibly the 800. This has the appearance of SeaRay + the 8MP camera. What’s interesting is that in the image below, there’s a bettery icon on the left. That’s supposed to be on the right. Being a Nokia ad though, they’re often prone to mistakes.

Nokia launches “new” Nokia C2-05 and X2-05

Hang on a minute, I thought Letter series were dead and we were all moving forward with numbers. What the heck is going on?


Way to go being confusing and all.

They’ve included a couple of promo videos to go with these new phones. They’re basic low end models, but they pack so much for the price (priced at 50 and 46 euros), with pretty cool options for MicroUSB transfer, MicroSD memory and amazingly, even bluetooth. I’m just rather narked towards the inconsistent branding.

There was also supposedly a new Nokia C5 or something or other but I could not be bothered to post about that. It was unexciting beyond belief.

Automatic Taxi Booking with Nokia, NFC and Taiwan Taxi - NokiaVNN

You can do a multitude of things with NFC that could really change the way we go about daily tasks, as well as creating new forms of behaviour. Not going to rant off again about the possibilities, but one new way it’s being used is to order taxis. Nokia together with Taiwan Taxi set up a NFC booking system.

Tapping the Taiwan Taxi poster allowed the phone to send a SMS to the company. This booked both a taxi for that location, confirmed 15 seconds later by SMS.

This is fantastic. Say you don’t know where you are, or you don’t have the number of a taxi firm and there aren’t that many taxis going past for you to flag down. This takes out that hassle. Just tap and a taxi appears. Of course, it’s possible that folks might abuse that system, but then again, they could do the same with a phone call. Unlike phonecalls though, SMS can be tracked and blocked easily.


Launching with Taiwan Taxi, there’s gonna be 15,000 locations for you to book a taxi from. It would also be pretty cool if you could even make the taxi payment with NFC. I wonder if that would let you leave a tip.


Some concerns:


Is the location embedded in the poster? What if someone moves one poster to another location?
Does the phone automatically send SMS? What if someone creates a NFC poster that makes you sign up to a premium service?

First Nokia Windows Phones by Christmas, + Nokia 800 for Airtel India?

I thought I’d roll these Windows Phone posts into one.

First up. NWP by Christmas


According to Danish site, mobilsiden.dk, Nokia’s first Windows Phone will be available before Christmas. I’m not sure if they’re quoting something new that Stephen Elop has said or possibly something reported time and time before. Yes, first batch is being announced this month, with at least two available this year in certain countries.


Secondly, NWP Nokia 800 airtel ad

The we were sent a scan of a possibly Nokia 800 pamphlet for Airtel, India. The source wants to remain anonymous. This was scanned very quickly apparently. Maybe no cameras allowed there or maybe it’s a photoshop, printed and scanned? I don’t know. I’m a little bit suspicious, particularly as the screenshot used isn’t even Mango. It’s a very old Windows 7 screen. It’s like they took some already available Nokia 800 shots, switched this screenshot, added some text and airtel logo, printed and scanned it in. If not, poor, very poor quality control in regards to the screenshot.


Now as for availability of this, I’m not sure. It is not connected to the “by Christmas” tag as that is for a select countries, of which, at least 6 are in Europe. US may have to wait for 2012 when Nokia Ace or whatever high end NWP appears.

Nokia 701 Belle update at Ovi Suite, v111.020.0307 #NokiaVNN

Nick emailed us some screenshots he took when connecting his Nokia 701 to Ovi Suite. It showed an Belle update to version 111.020.0307.


The update is huge. 405MB.

I’m not sure if this is for all current Belle devices or if this is even new to Nokia 701, but just in case, it’s worth checking out.

No Belle update for October 26 (+More anna variants) #NokiaVNN

I was concerned about the source GSM Arena used that claimed October 26th would be the date for Symbian Belle Update.

Yvonne (Promotions Manager (Software Update Management) aka Skyee – who, odd fact, I think looks like Elizabeth Banks/Kate Beckinsale) says that whilst Belle update is coming, it won’t be the 26th October.

and I can already tell you that this one is just a rumour & definitely not happening. 

As you all know we are NOT announcing any dates for our software updates in advance. Plus: At the moment our focus first is to get Symbian Anna out to our customers in the US, Canada & Australia. Symbian Belle IS coming – but definitely not on 26th October as some blogs are claiming.

20% of Windows Phone gets Mango update in 10 days. #NokiaVNN

WPCentral is saying that Android is paling in comparison to Windows Phone in terms of how long its taking for the install base to get the new update.


The figures indicate apparently 20% of WP getting Mango. This data is from a sample size of 83,527 – from users using an app called “I’m a WP7″.

Some things folks would want to point out is the sheer number of Androids out there compared to Windows Phone. Yes, that’s true.

I guess it’s the same thing when Apple CEO, Tim Cook compared how long it took Windows users to reach 10% of install base upgrading to Winows 7 as opposed to OSX Lion. Percentages should not be the only way to look at things.


However, on the positive side for Windows Phone, because of the guidelines (or restrictions) it does mean that unlike the multitude of Androids with different variants (UI, skins, hardware capabilities), the only thing in the way of an update is pretty much the network (and Samsung, because being Samsung your update is by default, delayed.)


Some things WP central want to point out:

• MS doing controlled update, meaning small percentage will get update notification.
• They expect 10 days before hitting 50% of users to Mango.
• Android 2.3 from DECEMBER 2010 has 38% of devices with that OS after 10 months.
• WPCentral say it’s not so much about the numbers but the difference for model update distribution. MS is much more direct to ensure that those 10 devices on 50 carriers were all on the same page at the same time.
• They understand scale matters, but point out that update model is a differentiating factor.

Now we have our own issues regarding updates on the Nokia side. Though Nokia does have tons more country variants, device variants, network variants to deal with. Another issue we should possibly consider is whether consumers actually choose to update. Update notification is useful. Not all users generally have a mobile internet plan or may not have WiFi or PC connection. I’m not sure what proportion those type of users make in terms of update processes.
We have our own big update again in the name of Belle. Some phones in certain countries still haven’t had Anna. Perhaps that might just be skipped entirely.

I’ve got through a few of the tips so far, but there’s still some more that will be published later.


One of the major things I missed yesterday was Ovi Store being updated on Symbian^3 handsets to become Nokia Store with the new Belle style UI. I was aware some Belle users had it, but was not quite sure of the reports that Anna users were getting it too. Comments here suggested though that this was indeed the case. Lo and behold, opening up Ovi Store got me my first taste of Belle. And it’s quite yummy.


This is the official update that you will be prompted to accept when opening the Ovi Store app. It will update and the next install will just be the new, blue, Nokia Store, complete with a very appealing new Belle UI.

Last we heard of the Nokia 603, it had passed FCC. Could we see this at Nokia World or do you think this Belle handset will get a mini launch of its own (e.g. Nokia 500)? BTW this also sports what seems to be a new battery type, BP-3L (like the Nokia RM-803 found yesterday)

Swype bought by Nuance for 100M USD? #NokiaVNN

You may have read this yesterday (this is another story that got stuck in the drafts folder due to just being in lectures and whatnot)

Swype apparently has been bought for over 100 Million Dollars by Nuance. If that name rings a bell, those are the folks that now also own T9 input. Makes sense having Swype too, as it’s really very useful for one handed portrait use. I’m not quite sure what the variations are in Swype between OSes but on other platforms, they seem to be much nicer to use than what we have on Symbian.

Weekend watch: Even more Windows Phone promo videos. #NokiaVNN

A follow up on the last batch of Windows Phone videos. @ChanseArrington tweeted about a new Windows Phone promo (new to me anyway) and it seems there were a whole bunch of other demo videos there too.

Firstly, these adverts are pretty good looking. Using the phone and the UI to show off, not glitsy artsy-fartsy nonsense crap. I guess you have to being it’s a MS video about WP only, but still. Overlay a narration and that would make a decent TV ad. Much better than a lot of what Nokia’s done lately.

Symbian Belle Update coming October 26th? #NokiaVNN

We’ve had a lot of tips in today, apologies for not being able to get to them. I did read some of them but I’ve been stuck in practicals and lectures all day followed my more errands after getting back to post.

I’m trying to get through them now, possibly for posting tomorrow (btw, some have already been pushed back as a weekend read thingy).

I was checking out vimeo last night when I noticed this pretty decent advert for the Nokia C2-06. I don’t know if it’s official or fan made, but it was apparently just done in one day, animated with Adobe After Effects and exported in Final Cut X.

Compared to the crap we’ve seen come out from Nokia with their artsy-fartsy meaningless drivel of web promos, this actually points out some things this phone does.


Being a web only promo, it suggests a certain audience willing to look at specifications, and this advert does that very well. Kudos to Wilton Santana.


In my opinion, I think it would help to have some narration.
